TL;DR: What is De-Centering Men?

  • What does de-centering men mean? It is the practice of prioritizing your own needs, goals, and joy over the needs and validation of men.
  • Why is it important? It prevents second shift burnout and helps women reclaim their mental health and self-worth.
  • Is it about hating men? No. It is about dismantling patriarchal structures in your own life to ensure you are an equal partner, not a servant to trad-wife culture.
At Full Circle Counseling Services, I believe that true wellness arises when your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony, and you are living authentically, unencumbered by rigid gender roles or societal pressures. As a Feminist therapist dedicated to empowering women to reclaim their personal power, I often notice a central roadblock to this harmony: the compulsion to center men’s needs, opinions, and presence over our own.  It is time for a radical act of self-love: de-centering men from your life. This doesn’t mean hating men. It means refusing to make them the sun around which your world revolves. It means reclaiming the energy, time, and power you have been socialized to give away.

The Stalled Revolution: Why We Are Still Sacrificing

In her groundbreaking 1989 book, The Second Shift, sociologist Arlie Hochschild discovered that working mothers were doing a full month more labor than their spouses each year. Fast forward to 2026, and despite our strides in the workforce, the revolution has stalled. Research indicates that women still bear the brunt of household chores and caregiving, often engaging in “mankeeping”—managing the emotional and social well-being of the men in their lives.

What You Pay for Centering Men

When you de-center yourself to focus on men, you pay a high price. You pay with your mental health, often experiencing increased depression and anxiety compared to single women. You pay with your potential, sacrificing career goals, personal passions, and self-care.
  • Emotional Labor: You become the default “kin-keeper,” managing social schedules and emotional needs while your own friendships atrophy.
  • Loss of Self: You may find yourself living up to unrealistic expectations, leading to mental, emotional, and spiritual decline.

The Cost to Society

This isn’t just an individual issue; it’s a systemic one. When society encourages “trad-wife” culture—the romanticization of traditional, male-dominated domestic roles—it keeps women financially dependent and politically disempowered. A society built on the invisible, unpaid labor of women is one that thrives on inequality. As Dr. Rubenstein notes in her book, the sacrifice syndrome doesn’t even benefit families; healthier and happier relationships form when mothers take care of themselves first.

How to De-Center Men: A Roadmap to Your Full Potential

Decentering men means placing your happiness, your peace, and your growth at the center.  Here’s what you’ll want to avoid, and what you’ll want to do instead to start down the path the your authentic, fully empowered life:
DON’T:
  • Sacrifice your career or financial security for a partner’s advancement.
  • Ask for permission to exist, speak, or make decisions.
  • Adopt the “trad-wife” narrative that your value is tied to serving a husband or keeping an immaculate house.
  • Engage in “mankeeping” by managing his social life, his emotions, or his relationships.
  • Diminish yourself to make a man feel comfortable or powerful.

DO:

  • Prioritize your own joy: Invest time in hobbies, friendships, and goals that have nothing to do with a man.
  • Set firm boundaries: Learn to say “no” to emotional labor, unpaid labor, and unfair compromises.
  • Build a strong female community: Nurture relationships with women who support your autonomy.
  • Be “selfist”: Take time and nurture yourself.  Reclaiming your power means identifying and honoring your own needs. As I often tell my female clients, when you attend to your own needs, it’s not selfish…but “self-full”.  You can’t give from an empty well.
  • Vet potential partners: Ensure they are equals who share the load, not burdens you have to manage.
